Learn the recent case law updates including its background, analysis, and decision.


10:00 AM: SOCIAL MEDIA AND PARALEGALS: HOW TO AVOID ETHICAL PITFALLS - presented by Joy C. Belk, NCCP, Managing Director of Paralegal Certification at North Carolina State Bar Association

Learn how to properly use social media without crossing ethical boundaries; the do’s and don’ts of gathering evidence on social media; maintaining client confidentiality on your social media; and avoiding UPL on social media.


11:00 AM: SOLDIERS & SAILORS ACT - presented by Attorney Mark Wierman, Wells Fargo

Learn the history and provisions of the Servicemember Civil Relief Act (SCRA), who the Act protects, when protections start, and other issues the Act addresses.


12:00 PM: ANNUAL MEMBERSHIP MEETING - presented by Iowa Paralegal Association Board of Directors

The purpose of this meeting is to introduce the Board of Directors, approve the 2022 Mid-Year Meeting and 2021 Annual Meeting minutes, announce the Paula Grady Memorial Scholarship Award winner(s), and discuss any items brought before the membership.

CONTINUING LEGAL EDUCATION CREDIT: IPA is working on approval for attorney and paralegal CLE credit by the NALA Certifying Board, and the Iowa Supreme Court Commission of Continuing Legal Education.  An announcement regarding the assignment of credits will be made at or following the seminar and will appear in the Original Notice membership newsletter.

Meet the President as Interim Seminar Director

Nicole L. French is employed with Seidl & Seidl, P.L.C., in Cedar Rapids, Iowa, working mostly in the areas of civil litigation, personal injury, family law, and probate, including estates, guardianships, and conservatorships. She has been a Paralegal for 18 years and obtained her Associate of Applied Science Degree in Paralegal Studies from Hamilton Business College. In 2008, Nicole was admitted as a Paralegal Affiliate member of the American Association for Justice. She has been a member of the Cedar Rapids Kirkwood Paralegal Program Advisory Board Committee since 2016. Nicole is a member of the National Association of Legal Assistants & Paralegals (NALA), and longtime member of NALA's State Affiliate, Iowa Paralegal Association, being admitted in 2004 as a student member before advancing to active membership. She has dutifully volunteered her time and efforts serving on multiple committees as well as the Board of Directors since 2014 as Region VI Director from 2014-2016, Treasurer from 2015-2019, 1st Vice President & Seminar Director from 2019-2021, and currently serving as President from 2021-2023.
